Itinerary

DAY 1:                                   BARI

Make your own way to the tour hotel in Bari (this hotel should be mentioned on your voucher). Meet the Tour Leader in your hotel in Bari, the main city of Puglia. In the afternoon, at approximately 3pm, enjoy a walking tour to learn about the city’s history and its most relevant monuments. Walk through the charming narrow alleys of the old city centre, admire the Basilica of San Nicola where the remains of Saint Nicholas of Myra are preserved, and the Norman-Swabian Castle, a 12th century fortress built by Roger the Norman and rebuilt by Frederick II of Swabia. After the visit, reach Piazza Mercantile where you will see the ancient Column of Justice. Overnight Bari. (D)

DAY 2:                                   BARI – TRANI – ALBEROBELLO

After breakfast, depart for Trani. Known as the ‘Pearl of Puglia’, the medieval town of Trani is one of the most remarkable cities of Southern Italy. Discover its art and monuments, visit the Jewish quarter, and the wonderful white stone Cathedral. In the afternoon, reach Castel Del Monte, one of Puglia’s most acclaimed landmarks. Visit this UNESCO World Heritage Site built in the 13th century under Roger the Norman, one of the most enlightened kings in history. The building is a harmonious geometrical complex, shaped as an octagon and surrounded by a still unsolved mystery. Continue to Alberobello: a UNESCO World Heritage Site made famous by the “Trulli”. These dry-stone cone-shaped houses were built in the 14th century from local limestone. It is possible to see these typical buildings all over the Itria Valley. Overnight stay in a scattered hotel, sleeping in a real “Trullo” in Alberobello. (B, D)

DAY 3:                                   ALBEROBELLO – MATERA – ALBEROBELLO

After breakfast, travel to the incredible UNESCO World Heritage Site of Matera. Visit and learn the history of the “Sassi di Matera” (Stones of Matera), caves that have been used as houses for over 9,000 years that are part of the historic centre of the city. Admire the Romanesque Cathedral that overlooks the city, its beautiful “Campanile” (Bell Tower), and enjoy the amazing view of the “Sassi”. Return to Alberobello in the late afternoon. Dinner and overnight in the “Trullo”. (B, D)

DAY 4:                                   ALBEROBELLO – LOCOROTONDO – OSTUNI – LECCE

Breakfast in the “square” of the scattered hotel (located about 200m from the Trulli). Depart for Locorotondo with some free time to visit this small town that is part of the “white towns” of Puglia. Continue to Ostuni, located between the “Trulli” region and Salento, and overlooks the coastal plain rich of ancient olive trees. Free time to discover the town. In the late afternoon, travel to Lecce in the heart of the Salento region. Overnight Lecce. (B, D)

DAY 5:                                   LECCE – OTRANTO – LECCE

After breakfast, enjoy a 3 hour guided visit of the city of Lecce. Learn the history of Lecce, visit the old town centre, the 12th century Cathedral, the Basilica of Santa Croce, and Piazza del Duomo. After the tour, depart for Otranto where you will have some free time. Spend the afternoon visiting the wonderful city of Otranto at your pace. Over the centuries, the city has been invaded by an impressive number of populations, amongst the others we can find traces of Greek, Roman and Turkish cultures. Wander around the old quarters to see how these cultures have blended together. In the early evening, reach Supersano where you will have dinner at the “Masseria le Stanzìe”. Visit this ancient farm, and learn about the history and culture of Puglia. See how homemade pasta is made and visit the medieval tombs that are part of the farm. Dinner will be a typical meal with products from the region. Return to Lecce for overnight. (B, D)

DAY 6:                                  LECCE

After breakfast, the tour concludes. End of our services. (B)

The standard of hotels and the level of guide expertise was excellent

Review for: Fantasy of Puglia

The standard of hotels and the level of guide expertise was excellent. The fact that breakfast and dinner were included in the pre-tour costs was of benefit to us. Our only concern would be the quality of the dinners presented to us during our 2 night stay in Alberobello. As the "dispersed hotel" did not have catering facilities, we ate at the same restaurant for 2 nights. This restaurant made little effort to give us meals comparable to the standard of the other included meals. On our first night the first course was a pasta with minimal sauce, the second course was 2 small Italian sausages with a small scoop of fried potato and the dessert was a chocolate sauce on ice-cream. Some of our group complained to Angela, our guide, who agreed that it was not satisfactory and rang the restaurant to ask for a higher quality meal the next night. On the second night, for the first course we were given a very similar pasta to the night before, then a small undressed tomato, mozzarella and lettuce salad accompanied by a small dressed tomato and lettuce salad. This was topped off by a slice of watermelon for dessert. We particularly enjoyed the final dinner at the 'Masseria le Stanzie' outside Lecce.
